Favorite film opening

The opening of a movie is important in drawing viewers' attention. Here are a few movies that caught my interest and became my sole inspiration to recreate one day.

ATONEMENT (2007)

Atonement is an old period film (during  the1930s) directed by joe wright. It follows the theme of old war conflict mixed with romance which makes it very enjoyable.

The opening of atonement starts with the title card paired with the sound of a type writer, the letters of the title forming after every click imitating the typewriter machine. The sound still continues after the title disappears thus transitioning to the first scene where the little girl is using the same typewriters sound. this makes the scene very cinematic and attractive.

the sound of the type writer continues as the girl paces around the house, the fast paced orchestra and quick typing adding to the fast tempo of editing. Along with the sound the visually appealing color grading is also one of my most favorite features of this film, the soft blur, light saturation and earthly colors reminds me of the kodak colors

Along with the cinematic black bars and editing pace, the mis-en-scene of the opening scene is also very beautiful, the color palette very pleasing to the eye, the costumes the props and location all adding to the verisimilitude of the scene. I personally love the opening scene as the period theme is presented beautifully as well as small elements are added to the editing and camera shots. Storyline wise one of my favorite movies!

SHUTTER ISLAND (2010)

Shutter island is a 2010 psychological thriller directed by martin scorsese, this is also based on a novel and has a very darker and eerie theme.

The opening scene of shutter island starts with suspenseful scary music with the bold title card, already hinting at the genre of the film. Scenes after show the ship emerging and the inside of the so ship, the cool teal tones popping in the scene. what i love most about this clip is the beautiful color grading, the blues surrounding the protagonist while peachy skin tones illuminate his face with motivated lighting. This adds more depth and cinematic feels to the scene

in the next few scenes, the shots are cut beautifully as the camera angles complimented the cuts more. the dialogue exchange with the man, the cool tones, dry grain and shadows makes it even better. however the next scene with the woman is juxtaposed by the warm tones and eerie music playing, saturated contrasted colors and facial expressions adding more beauty.

and so as preference i found both of these openings very visually pleasing as well interesting as they made me want to view the rest of the film.
